The Information Resource For Accident Victims In Pennsylvania

Some Advice on Choosing the Right Motorcycle Helmets

If you ride a motorcycle, you have most likely been urged again and again to wear motorcycle helmets while riding. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (N.H.T.S.A.) reported that, in 2008, 42 percent of motorcyclists killed in accidents were not wearing helmets. The same year, in Pennsylvania, more than half of motorcycle fatalities were suffered by riders not wearing helmets. These statistics demonstrate that a helmet can be, and often is, what separates a motorcycle injury from a motorcycle fatality. But with so many helmets to choose from, it can be difficult to know which helmet is best.

In May, a study by J.D. Power and Associates showed that Arai and Icon helmets rank highest among consumers. The study polled consumers on an array of attributes, including ventilation, de-fogging performance, face shield effectiveness, graphic design, weight, and comfort. J.D. Power reports that Arai helmets have maintained superiority over other makers for 13 consecutive years.

In addition to choosing a maker, there are online resources that offer some advice on selecting the best motorcycle helmets for you. Here are a few key tips:

  • For one, the site stresses the importance of only buying Department of Transportation (D.O.T) certified helmets. These helmets have been tested and approved, ensuring their reliability.

  • Of particular importance is comfort and retention: always make sure your helmet fits snugly but not so snugly that it causes discomfort or pain. It is important that the helmet does not slide around while adorned.

  • A note on appearance: while black helmets are the most popular among consumers, choosing a brightly colored helmet can increase your visibility to other drivers which reduces the risk of being struck by a motorist who is unaware of your presence.
