Common Birth Injuries

Birth injuries can be the result of negligence and improper care by a doctor or hospital during childbirth. These injuries are often devastating and cause families physical, emotional and financial pain. Here are some common birth injuries that expectant parents should be aware of:

  • Cerebral Palsy – Cerebral Palsy is a disability resulting from injury to the brain, which is sometimes caused by low levels of oxygen to the brain before or during childbirth. There is no cure for Cerebral Palsy.
  • Erb’s Palsy (Brachial Plexus Palsy) – Erb’s Palsy is an injury that can result in the loss of feeling in the arms, hands or fingers. It is the result of a stretch or tear in the nerves connecting the neck and upper chest. Typically Erb’s Palsy occurs when a baby’s shoulder get stuck behind the pubic bone of the mother and the delivering doctor does not use correct technique when delivering the baby.
  • Skull fractures, bleeding in the brain, swelling of the brain or facial nerve damage – All of these injuries can result from a doctor’s improper use of a vacuum or forceps to assist in vaginal delivery.

It is completely understandable that you want to know what is wrong with your newborn and whether it could have been avoided. Many birth injuries come with substantial lifetime medical care costs.  If your newborn suffers from any of the above injuries they may have be a victim of medical malpractice.
